Outside: A Zombie Apocalypse Drama with Family Drama at Its Core

Have you watched Outside starring Sid Lucero and Beauty Gonzales? If not, you might want to set your expectations properly before diving in. Unlike the usual zombie flicks that are action-packed and full of gore, Outside focuses more on family dynamics and trauma set in a world overrun by the undead.

A Slow-Burn Drama Masquerading as a Zombie Thriller

While many might expect Outside to be a zombie fest, it's quite the opposite. The zombies, while present, are more of a backdrop to the real focus: the fractured relationships and unresolved issues within the family.

The film's narrative revolves around a family fleeing to an isolated farm to escape the outbreak. However, as the family attempts to survive, old secrets start to surface, becoming a greater threat than the undead lurking outside. It’s a slow-burn movie with subtle storytelling—don’t expect the usual intense zombie action.

Highlights: Cinematography and Sid Lucero's Performance

One thing you’ll appreciate in Outside is its impressive cinematography. The film does an excellent job of using its environment to enhance the tense, isolated atmosphere. There's one standout scene where Sid Lucero's character is grappling with a zombie in the grass, showcasing how good prosthetics and practical effects can be in the local film industry. Kaya naman pala natin ng magandang prosthetics eh! (ehem Mallari hahah).

Speaking of performances, Sid Lucero truly shines in this movie. His portrayal of a man grappling with both the external threat of zombies and the internal demons of his family's past is gripping. On the other hand, while Beauty Gonzales does well in her role, some may feel her emotional range was a bit limited throughout the film.

Storytelling and Themes: Trauma Over Zombies

The movie's strength lies in its exploration of trauma. The characters' mental and emotional states deteriorate as the story unfolds, reflecting how deeply past family conflicts can affect individuals, especially when compounded by an apocalyptic scenario.

However, the film doesn't delve deeply into explaining the various conflicts.  Instead, it leaves hints for viewers to pick up on. It's not a film with a shocking twist or complex plot. You get a straightforward, almost minimalist story about a family's descent into madness.

Final Thoughts: Worth a Watch?

The marketing for Outside was effective, they did a great job on the trailer because they got me curious. If you're expecting a zombie action-thriller, you might be disappointed. But if you go into the film knowing it's a character-driven drama with zombies as a backdrop, you'll appreciate it for what it is. The performances, especially from Sid Lucero, the excellent cinematography, and the deeper exploration of trauma make this film stand out in its own right.

Outside is now streaming on Netflix. If you're a fan of slow-burn dramas and don't mind fewer zombie scares in exchange for more emotional depth, give it a go!
