BDO, Asia’s Premier Banks Release New Report to Support Climate Transition

BDO Unibank Inc. (BDO), together with other leading Asian banks, has released the Asia Transition Finance Annual Report 2024, aimed at supporting Asian economies in achieving a “just and orderly transition” toward a sustainable future.

As a member of The Asian Transition Finance (ATF) Study Group, a private sector-led initiative primarily involving banks operating in Asia, BDO plays a key role in addressing the financial challenges Asian economies face on their path to net-zero emissions. The ATF Study Group was established to highlight the importance of transition finance (TF) and to provide practical recommendations that complement existing frameworks, such as global standards and taxonomies. Its focus is on helping financial institutions (FIs) assess and navigate TF cases, identify challenges and explore potential solutions.

The ATF Annual Report 2024, the product of months of discussions among core members—mostly commercial banks—also involved development banks, export credit agencies, public agencies, and finance associations as observers and knowledge contributors. Industry experts from energy, insurance, and advisory sectors participated as guest speakers to offer their insights.

A key focus of the 2024 report is the importance of mitigating and sharing risks in transition projects through collaboration between the public and private sectors. This challenge, identified in discussions from 2022 and 2023, is crucial in making transition projects both feasible and bankable. The Study Group stresses that understanding the major risks involved and how each can be addressed by different stakeholders will promote coordinated efforts between the public and private sectors.

As a founding member of the ATF Study Group since 2021, BDO acknowledges that Asia’s sustainability transition may progress more gradually compared to regions like Europe and the United States. However, BDO is committed to working collaboratively to guide Asian economies in the same direction, ensuring a smoother energy transition for the region.

BDO will continue expanding its Sustainable Finance initiatives, which have been in place since 2010. These efforts will focus on funding new and existing renewable energy projects, boosting capacity, and helping the country reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
