Coco Martin's Movie: Pula – A Disappointing Watch on Netflix

If you’ve seen that Coco Martin’s movie Pula is trending at #1 on Netflix, you’re not alone. I, too, was intrigued by its popularity and gave in to curiosity. However, after spending 1 hour and 54 minutes watching, I can confidently say, it was disappointing! The movie left me with more questions than answers, and I can’t help but feel I wasted my time.

TRIGGER WARNING: Guns, Rape, and Violence
Before diving into the details, here's an important trigger warning. Pula contains scenes involving guns, rape, and violence. If these themes are distressing or not your cup of tea, I highly recommend skipping this movie.

Plot Overview:

The movie revolves around the brutal murder of a teenage girl that shakes a small, sleepy town. Coco Martin plays a troubled police officer tasked with investigating the case. As he delves deeper, the investigation starts to test his limits, but that’s where the excitement ends.

First Impressions:

Let me start with the synopsis—something that frustrated me right away. I had so many questions before even pressing play. From the vague description, I felt misled, which set the tone for my entire viewing experience. Here's what I found confusing:

  • Why is the movie titled Pula? There's mention of a "red tide," the sky is red, but how does this connect to the story? I couldn’t find a meaningful link to the plot.
  • What’s the deal with the faith healer at the beginning? The movie starts with a faith healer, but this element didn’t seem to tie in with the rest of the film. It left me scratching my head.

Awkward Dialogues and Confusing Shots:

One of my biggest frustrations with Pula was its awkward dialogues and random shots that felt disconnected from the storyline. At times, it was hard to understand the significance of certain scenes. For instance, why was Julia Montes in this movie? Her character felt underdeveloped, and it wasn’t clear why she was even there.

Predictable Plot:

I could tell who the villain was early on. The movie tried to build suspense, but it was easy to figure out. The killer's reveal lacked the shock value the story needed, making the plot feel flat and predictable.

Unnecessary Scenes:

Several scenes left me questioning their purpose, including one in a morgue where a female character is unnecessarily topless. Why? I couldn’t understand the reasoning behind including that in the movie, and it added to the overall confusion.

Overall Verdict:

Pula had potential with its gripping premise, but it failed to deliver. The story had no clear direction, lacked depth, and didn’t provide satisfying answers. It felt like a collection of disconnected scenes that ultimately led nowhere.

But don’t just take my word for it—watch Pula on Netflix and be the judge! If you’re into thrillers, maybe you’ll appreciate it more than I did. However, consider this a fair warning: you might end up feeling the same way I did—disappointed.
