Easy DIY Totoro Costume

When I was told that there was a theme to our MBP Christmas Party 2018 which is 'At The Movies', I thought what movie character would I be? Being a mom, it is not surprising that I thought of what my kids are actually watching. He He He. It is so funny that whenever there is a costume party, I always want to dress up as my favorite Disney character 'Stitch'. This time I want something different. And that when Totoro comes in.

At first, I wanted to be 'No Face' (from a Miyasaki movie too ‘Spirited Away’). The costume is easy, just wear something black then have a mask. But I went on with Totoro instead as I have this gray hoodie dress that is perfect for an easy DIY.

My Neighbor Totoro is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli. He is an animal-like forest spirit that befriends siblings Satsuki and Mei.

(Yes, 3 yrs old pa lang ako nung pinalabas 'to but I was able to watch it during my 20's)

There are two more cute spirits together with Totoro which is ChÅ«-Totoro (the blue one) and the small one is Chibi-Totoro. Watch this movie and you'll understand why I adore it. I love re-watching Miyasaki films as well as the other Studio Ghibli films with my kids.

Now let's go to the things needed for our easy DIY Totoro costume. This is an easy DIY that needs a little sewing, you can even use glue.

Things Needed:
  • A gray hoodie dress/sweatshirt/onesie.
  • Felt Cloth in colors black, gray & white. (I bought mine from 3C Creations)
  • Fiberfill for stuffing.
  • Scissors, pins, needles and threads.
  • Glue or glue stick & glue gun.
  • Pencil/Pen.

First, I cut out the belly part, eyes, and ears. For the belly, you can have it on a circle size or any free shapes like the ones from Totoro. Check any reference image for the look. I did not use any pattern paper anymore and just draw it directly on the felt cloth and cut it. I folded the belly part vertically to get the exact sides.

Cut 2 pairs of eyes on 2 sizes. Draw a free-form nose and cut it.

I cut 4 ears that needs sewing and stuffing.

After cutting for the parts, I proceeded with the ears first as this will be the hardest process as it needs stitching and stuffing.

I used a basic stitch (back-stitch) to put the 2 wrong sides of the ears then have it turned to the right side out.

Just leave an allowance for the opening for the stuffing of fiberfill.

I sewed on the ears on the hoodie and stitched on the eyes and nose too.

And I almost forgot, I also cut those jellybeans-like pieces added on the belly. I used glue stick and glue gun to placed those on the belly. Stitched the belly on the gray dress and that's it we are done with our easy DIY Totoro costume. So easy right?

To complete the look, I borrowed my daughter's Totoro socks and graced our Christmas party. I am thinking of not removing the parts on this dress (I usually use this hoodie dress going to work) for the meantime. Maybe I can still use it, you'll never know! :)

I had fun wearing this costume and introducing it to my co-mommy bloggers. So what do you think of this easy DIY costume?
