A Korean Odyssey (Hwayugi) Review: Interesting But Confusing

This is the second Koreanovela that I am reviewing on the blog. Recently, I've been addicted to different kinds of series on Netflix and after watching almost all the international series, I went back to watching another KDrama. The first time I saw A Korean Odyssey (Hwayugi) from an FB Korean page and I got curious.

Plot

About a woman with the ability to see demons and ghosts, Jin Sun Mi (Oh Yeon Seo) learns to deal with her demons with the help of a talisman (a yellow umbrella). Her blood is also something precious, with the scent of a lotus flower, overwhelming and drawing demons towards her. As a girl, Jin Sun Mi encounters both the Bull Demon, Woo Hwi Chul (Cha Seung Won) and the Monkey King, Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung Gi). Her encounter with them is significant, as she frees Son Oh Gong from his imprisonment and makes a pact with him that binds the two.

A Korean Odyssey (Hwayugi) Review: Interesting But Confusing

My Thoughts & Impressions
  • At first, I was thrown with so many stories not knowing where they came from or how it happens. If you are a kind of gal who is slow-paced on adapting stories, it might leave you clueless on what's happening.
  • History of the characters is not explained well.
  • I had a mixed feeling about the chemistry of Son Oh-gong and Jin Seon-mi. I love it and hate it at the same time. They forced the love story at the start. Thankfully, they did well in the later episodes.
  • Speaking of characters, Devil King's acting brought color to this series. I love his love and hate relationship with Son Oh-Gong.
  • I felt really bad for Piggy and Zombie girl. I hoped they had a better ending. It actually breaks my heart.
  • Great soundtrack "When I Saw You" by Bumkey it goes thru my heart and kept playing in my head. One of the few things I like about this series.

A Korean Odyssey (Drama, 2017, 화유기)

  • At first, I thought this was a horror Korean TV series but it is mixed with comedy, drama and even horror.
  • Mini ghost stories are good, depicting human bad interest that makes the ghost lure into the human world.
  • The pacing of the story was quite slow at the beginning and doesn't have that strong narrative so I keep on setting it aside and it was hard for me to finish it. I got interested again when my colleague urged me to finish it as the story will progress from Episode 10 forward.
  • They put in so many things in the story that it already forgets the main focus.
  • It was enjoyable but somewhat made me confuse.
  • I hate the black dragon! It was the finale! C'mon guys you could do better than that! Enough said!
  • There are so many things left behind. I really didn't like how it ended but I think they intentionally did it that way to make the audience analyze the story.
